MOCHILA INTERVENTION BY JORGE DUQUE

Every year the BeLive Organization joins different colombian foundations based in U.S.A for the auction of the bags done by the Wayuu, an indigenous tribe based in the north of Colombia. Mochila is the original name of these kind of bags; every time BeLive makes this lovely event they choose very important designers so they are able to style one of this bags using different materials and techniques. When the bags are ready they are sold in an auction, and all the money goes to different social welfare programs in Colombia. Moschino, Provenza Schooler, Vera Wang, Valentino, Silvia Tcherassi, Carolina Herrera, Tory Burch, Missoni, and some other important designers have been called to involved all these bags.

This time the colombian designer and winner of the Tv Show "Project Runway Latin America" JORGE DUQUE, was also invited to involve one of those Mochilas. The designer made antropomorphic figures which represent the Wayuu comunit. Materials derived from petroleum and rubber were used to style the bags; he choose this type of materials as a signal of the difficult situation this tribe suffers due to the exploitation of coal and petroleum in its territory. "That´s why the interior of the bag is black" replies the designer. Other materials like italian fittings, calfskin, and Cuquillo thread; where also used by Jorge Duque.
